Day 1: Welcome to the tropics

Where is the rainforest??? - That is what you will ask yourself when you arrive to the Central valley with its endless rooftops and sparkling lights. Here there is no rainforest, first you will meet your tour guide at the airport and brings you to your first hotel. The hotel is located in a quiet area, approx. 20 minutes from San José. On the way your guide will tell you general information about Costa Rica and the tour. After you arrive in the hotel you can have a rest or go for dinner in a nearby restaurant (not included). If your flight arrives in the morning, your guide will be happy to show you the city center with a lot of shops, museums and the national theater in the afternoon.
Check-In at the hotel is from 2 pm, if you wish to check in earlier, we are happy to request it for you (small surcharge).
No Meals Included

Day 2: Into the rainforest

The morning drive through the Braulio Carrillo National Park reassures that there it is, the unspoiled rainforest in Costa Rica. The road winds through deep green woods, gorgeos and past beautiful waterfalls until it reaches the lowlands on the Caribbean coast. We see banana plantations and many trucks that carry the bananas for Chiquita, Dole & co. before they arrive in the port city of Limón. During a stop over in the city center, you guide tells the interesting history of Limón and the origin of the predominantly black population. We continue on the Atlantic Coast before we go to Bananito. In Bananito you change the bus for a 4W-drive and head into the loneliness. By passing a small a rural path and rivers you will get closer to your rainforest lodge.

Enjoy the afternoon in hammocks, far away from TV's, streets and the stress of the daily life.

Day 3: Exploring the primary rainforest

After a typical hearty costa rican breakfast you start your journey to your rainforest adventure. We walk deeper into the woods, over hills and pass river beds until the green canopy over your head gets thicker and thicker and you become one with the rainforest. Can you hear the monkeys roar in the distance? Or how the sloths hanging relaxed in the trees and maybe you are able to spot a snake - pure rainforest. We pause at a river with crystal clear water. You can take a swim or enjoy a natural massage under the waterfall before you head back home.

Today you will sleep well with the sounds of the birds and cicadas.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Selva Bananito Lodge** Standard Bungalow

Day 4: Dairy farmers, cheese makers and an active volcano

Today we say goodbye to the calmness of the Selva Bananito Lodge and head back to Bananito in our 4-W drive. From there on we continue with the bus to an agricultually region. You are welcomed by hilly landscapes with large cattle pastures, old and trees and the Turrialba volcano with its smoke cloud in the background.

In the afternoon we learn more about the architecture of the indigenous people in Costa Rica. The Guayabo national monument shows archaelogical excavation of an ancient indian epoch. Besides many old relics and ancient gravesites there is an aqueduct that is still working perfectly today.

Tag 5: Irazú volcano crater and hiking

We get up early today because there is lots on the schedule for today. First the journey leads to the Irazú national park. The deep crater and a wonderful green lagoon (might be dry in the summer time) are the highlights of the biggest volcano in the country. After a short walk across the ash fields we start our hike of 9 kilometers for today. The path leads us downhill, we pass potatoe plantations and secondary rainforest. On the way we have a beautiful panoramic view over the active site of the Turrialbas volcano. You can see that the forest in burned out in some places and the people were forced to leave their homes for safety reasons.

In the afternoon we go up on the 3491 meter high Cerro de la Muerte by bus. The famous Interamericana street leads 80 kilomter further up until we change to a small, steep road to San Gerado de Dota.

Surrounded by high mountains your lodge is situated in a small village with wonderful gardens.

Breakfast Included

Trogon Lodge** Standard Room

Day 6: Paramo vegetation and emerald green Quetzal

Even before breakfast you start the search for the real treasure of this region with your guide. The shimmering green and red quetzal, the birds god of the Mayas, lives in the fascinating woods and is often active especially in the early morning hours.

After a good and hearty breakfast it is time to hike through the cloud forest, which is particularly enchanted by the many mosses, lichens and bromeliads that live in the trees. On the hike along the crystal clear river you will learn how important this eco system is for our planet and how the mosses absorb massive amounts of moisture and dispense it again through evapuration.

At a higher level, the vegetation is sparse and various herbs will be visible in the Paramo vegetation.

In the forest and in the gardens of the lodge you can watch and take photos of different birds. Especially the little hummingbirds are always looking for nectar in the flowers and impress with their beautiful plumage in the sunshine.

Day 7: The Pacific Ocean is calling!

From the highlands of the Talamanca mountains we are going to the southern Pacific coast. Heat and the high humidity - the pure tropics are waiting for you with an incredible variety of plants and animals. The Wildlife Reserve Rancho La Merced awaits you with different path through lush forests, hills and open spaces on the river banks of the Rio Morete. Tucans and green Amazons are sitting in the trees while a group of wild boars or rare squirrel monkeys rustling in the woods.

If you don't like to hike in the woods you can turn into a Vaquero - a cowboy - (surcharge $40 US, payable on spot, available depending on the season) and go with the workers of the farm "Rancho la Merced" to collect cattle on a horse. Often, calves and cows are checked, counted and vexed, you will get a good insight into the daily work on a cattle farm, which is managed in ways of sustainable farming.

Breakfast Included

Day 8: In the kayak through the mangroves

The last days have been pretty exhausting and we walked a lot. So today we will have a special program for the arms. In the morning we start a kayak tour through the mangroves in Hatillo. We take it easy and paddle slowly through the impressive root forests. The thing you can hear are the sounds of the wind and the beautiful birds voices. High roots and hidden water paths as far as you can look. If you are lucky you can observe turtles and caimans in the water and monkeys or herons in the trees. Well camouflaged among the leaves you can even spot boas taking a sun bath in the branches. Your guide will explain the complex system of the mangrove forest and will show you different types of mangroves which are home in this area.

In the afternoon you can either take a swim in the ocean and relax at the beach or you can participate in an optional dolphin and whale watching tour (not included, whale watching season January/February and July/August).

Day 9: Return to San José or optional beach extension

In the late morning we are going back to San José along the Pacific coast. On the way we are stopping at a bridge on the Río Tárcoles to observe giant crocodiles that take a sunbath on the river banks. On the late afternoon you say goodbye to your guide and driver after a wonderful tour to the hidden treasures of Costa Rica.

If you have booked an optional beach extension, you will go directly to the beach. In this case the last night in San José will change to the last day of the tour. If you are looking for solitude and privacy in the nature we recommend to stay in the Drake Bay, and if you prefer it lively you can go to beaches in Manuel Antonio.
